How to Transition Your Cat to an Automatic Litter Box

Cats are creatures of habit, and the litter box is the one place where they notice change most sharply. Swap it abruptly and you may find yourself cleaning up accidents for a fortnight. Introduce it properly and most cats adapt without drama. Follow these steps for a smooth switch to the Smart Automatic Cat Litter Box.

Step 1: Put it next to the old box

Set the new box up beside your current one rather than replacing it outright. Leave both available. This single step prevents the majority of transition problems, because your cat always has a familiar option while they investigate the new one.

Give it a few days before expecting any interest at all.

Step 2: Use familiar litter

Fill the new box with exactly the same litter your cat already uses, provided it suits the unit. Changing the box and the litter at the same time is asking for trouble. Texture underfoot matters enormously to cats, and familiar texture plus familiar scent tells them clearly that this is a bathroom.

Step 3: Add a little used litter

Transfer a small scoop of used litter from the old box into the new one. The scent marks it as a legitimate toilet rather than a strange new object. Do not overdo it. One scoop is plenty.

Step 4: Let your cat get used to the enclosure

Some cats hesitate to walk into a covered space the first time. Keep the entrance clear, leave a treat just inside and let curiosity do the work. Do not lift your cat and place them in it. That turns the box into something that happens to them rather than something they chose.

For most cats, the fully enclosed design quickly becomes a benefit rather than a barrier. They value the privacy once they understand it.

Step 5: Introduce the automatic cleaning gradually

Once your cat is using the new box confidently, let the automatic cleaning run. Stay nearby the first few times so you can see how they react and reassure them if needed.

Most cats learn within days that the noise means the box is being tidied, not that something is coming for them.

Step 6: Remove the old box

When the new box has been used consistently for several days, take the old one away. Do not do this on the same day as any other change, such as moving furniture or a trip away. Watch for accidents during the first week afterwards.

Troubleshooting tips

  • If your cat avoids the new box, go back to Step 1 and slow the pace down.
  • Keep the box in a quiet, low-traffic spot away from noisy appliances.
  • Wipe the exterior regularly. A grubby box is an uninviting box.
  • Never place the box next to the food bowls. Cats will not eat beside a toilet, and our guide to setting up a smart feeding schedule covers where the feeding station should go instead.

Give it time

Most cats adapt within one to two weeks. A small number take a month. The slower you go at the start, the less likely you are to deal with weeks of accidents afterwards.
